Navigating And Supporting Beneficiaries Suffering From A Mental Illness

This presentation will provide a deeper dive into the interactions and management issues that fiduciaries encounter with a beneficiary suffering from a mental illness. We will walk you through the case from assessment, case management and crisis response. A team of professionals will review key areas that a fiduciary might be faced with during a conservatorship or a trust administration when the beneficiary is mentally ill. This will include the process of assessment and intervention, looking to outside resources, like NAMI, to offer support to the beneficiaries and their families, getting a case manager involved to support day programs, housing and crisis intervention, an overview of a potential psychiatric hospitalization and the LPS conservatorship process. Throughout the presentation, a moderator will address critical information for the acting fiduciary.

Meredith serves in many fiduciary roles including trustee, conservator, power of attorney, executor, guardian ad litem, and provides consultation to families as they navigate the estate planning process. IMT Associates is a team of professionals specializing in accounting, bookkeeping, case management, real property oversight and social security and public benefits. In addition to being a California Licensed Professional Fiduciary, Meredith holds a California Marriage and Family Therapist license. EBI is a non profit located in San Leandro that provides community living and employment services to approximately 500 individuals with disabilities. Tom has a Masters degree in Rehabilitation Administration from University of San Francisco. Tom has been involved in providing services to people with disabilities since 1986.

Gary Freedman-Harvey, PhD, is a licensed psychologist with over 25 years of experience, specializing in geriatric forensics in the assessment of mental capacity, decision-making, and susceptibility to undue influence. He conducts mental capacity evaluations for legal purposes: conservatorship, will contests, trust litigation, elder abuse, undue influence and scams/victimization. Dr. Freedman-Harvey collaborates with PFAC members, CAC/PVP attorneys, and assists both the Probate and Mental Health courts in five counties of California.

Dr. Dores’ practice specializes in behavioral consultation, evaluation and training in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Developmental Disabilities and Traumatic Brain Injury, with an emphasis on the assessment and treatment of significant behavior problems.
